APPLYING FOR FINANCIAL AID

HOW AND WHEN? Students interested in receiving financial aid must file a FAFSA annually. Find out how here. Our school code is 003899. Online filing is encouraged. If submitting a paper version, send to: Federal Student Aid Programs, P.O. Box 4691, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864-0059.

There is no "priority deadline" however, apply as soon after January 1st as possible. Certain aid programs have limited funding and are awarded based on the date the FAFSA was received.

Financial aid is money made available by the federal and state governments and the institution. It's awarded based on a student’s eligibility and need. When applying for FAFSA, students are applying for loans, grants and workstudy. To be eligible, undergrads must be enrolled in at least 6 credits, grads in 5 credits.

HOW MUCH CAN I GET? Effective 2009-2010 academic year, the yearly maximums for sub and unsub loans are: $5,500-freshman, $6,500-sophomores, $7,500-juniors/seniors, and $18,500-grad. students. Cumulative borrowing limits are $31,500 for an undergrads and $65,500 for a graduate student. See additional student loan information here.

HOW AND WHEN WILL I FIND OUT WHAT I'M ELIGIBLE FOR? UWGB receives your FAFSA 1-2 weeks after you complete it online. If additional information is needed, we'll send you a letter requesting that information. Once your file is complete, we review your eligibility and award you financial aid. You'll be notified of your award via campus email and should accept or decline your award on SIS within 3 weeks, or it will be cancelled. If you miss the deadline, contact us.

We start awarding students in April. If you applied before April, and your file is complete, you'll be awarded in mid-April. If you applied after April, you'll be awarded within 2-3 weeks of filing your FAFSA and having a complete file. We review your FAFSA once you are admitted. AFTER APRIL: If more then a month has passed since you've completed your FAFSA and you haven't heard anything from UWGB, we probably haven't  received your FAFSA. This happens to people who forget to electronically sign the FAFSA with their PIN (parents-if applicable and students) or forget our school code 003899.

WHAT IF I DON'T GET ENOUGH FINANCIAL AID? See more options here. Students who declined their original award and want to find out if those funds are still available, can send an email to the financial aid office

FINANCIAL AID RELEASE DATE-Typically, your pending financial aid will be released on the first day of classes. If aid is delayed, contact us. It's your responsibility to make payments or other arrangements with the Billing office prior to the deadline.
